Skin aging is largely genetic in nature, but good health & skin care habits can make a world of difference.
While most women focus on reducing wrinkles, they're not the only sign of skin aging. Dark spots, uneven skin tone, dull skin, and under eye bags can have just as much of an effect as wrinkles.
Women can reduce skin aging by eating a healthier diet, reducing direct sun exposure to the skin, and reducing the amount of makeup used daily.
Experiment with different skin care to find one that works for you.
One product can be very powerful, but it can't do it all. Resist the urge to find the single "miracle product" that will magically make your skin look younger.
Whatever you do, do it consistently. When you find a skin care routine that works for you, keep doing it!
Aging should be celebrated, not avoided. Focusing on health leads to more beautiful, radiant skin.
"Korean skincare has become complicated, with 10+ step routines and a wide variety of products and ingredients," said Young-min Shin.
Young-min Shin works at a laboratory in Busan, South Korea, where they extract natural ingredients for use in some of the biggest skincare brands. She loves her skincare routine but only uses five products in it.
"The difference between Korean skincare and Western skincare is that people in American, Europe, and other places want one product that will solve their problems. We Koreans don't believe in that. We want the whole package. Ten products in your skincare routine... that's pretty common."
While Americans are no stranger to skin care routines, Young-Min believes that the difference between American routines and Korean routines is largely philosophical.
"Americans want the products that will solve their skin problems, like wrinkles and dark spots. Koreans see skin care more as part of a healthy lifestyle. It's just normal here. Of course we use a serum, a toner, a second serum, a foam cleanser, an oil cleanser, a moisturizer, a sheet mask, a gel mask, a BB cream, and a night cream. It's not obsession, it's just accepted."
Young-min admits that it can be a little excessive. "That's why I decided to work for a skincare lab. I wanted to know the most important ingredients for keeping my skin youthful and healthy."
When asked why some women age faster than others, Young-min chuckled.
"Well, the real reason Korean women look younger is because we've developed a skincare tradition that stretches back to ancient times. It was only within the last century that we started to innovate with powerful synthetic ingredients."
"Now I want to return to our roots, using natural Korean ingredients that have made our women beautiful for thousands of years."
“I always had the smallest kit and the fewest products of any of my colleagues,” she remembers. She let her hair go gray in her late 40s, and that's when the compliments started. People couldn't believe how young she looked even with gray hair. They thought she dyed her hair gray!
"In Korea, age is greatly admired and respected. Only young women want to stay young forever. The best thing a woman can do is to grow older while still looking beautiful."
About a year ago, Young-Min went into the skincare business herself. “I’d made skincare for two decades and when I came up with this line, I created what I would want in my own kit,” she says. “I wanted to do a line that did everything I wanted for my dark spots, wrinkles, under-eye bags, and uneven skin tone. Most importantly, I wanted to use natural Korean ingredients.” The overall effect, she says, is a dewy, glowing face.
“When somebody says to you, ‘Wow, did you fall in love?’ That’s successful skincare.”
